Top health, safety award goes to Alcoa WA operations.

October 14, 2003 Safety and health excellence in the mining industry was recognised last night with Alcoa World Alumina Australia's Western Australia (WA) mining operations winning the 2003 MINEX award.

The annual award was presented by State Development Minister Clive Brown at a gala dinner in Perth hosted by the Minerals Council of Australia.

MCA director Brian Horwood said Alcoa WA Mining was judged the outstanding MINEX applicant for its demonstrated safety culture promoting continuous improvement in performance both on and off site.

Four other minerals operations received MINEX acknowledgements but Goldfields operations were not among the winners.

The National Safety and Health Innovation Award was presented to Camberwell Coal from New South Wales for the development of its hydraulic bleed manifold.

Mr Horwood said recognition of excellence and innovation was a key element of the industry's leadership approach to safety and health and its drive to achieve zero fatalities, injuries and diseases.

But he said there was no room for complacency with 12 deaths in the past reporting year and no downward trend in fatalities.
