Winners of Alcoa-sponsored environmental language arts contest recognized at Louisiana Governor's Mansion

More than one hundred people attended an awards ceremony at the Louisiana Governor's Mansion on June 5, 2003 to recognize winners of the Governor's Environmental Education Commission First Annual Art and Language Art's Contest sponsored by Alcoa.  This year’s contest, themed “Louisiana, The Water State,” was open to students grades K-12 from across the state.  The contest attracted almost 1000 entries and awards were presented to the 24 winners and finalists.

Lake Charles Location Manager and member of the Environmental Education Commission Phil Blair led the sponsorship opportunity for this well-received statewide school program.  Leaders from six Alcoa locations in Louisiana joined in the celebration, which was hosted by First Lady Alice Foster and the Governor's Commission on Environmental Education.  Proud students, parents and teachers, as well as state representatives, senators and officials of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality attended the event.  Alcoa received considerable praise and credit for this initiative by several speakers.

As a follow up, the Governor's Commission will produce both newspaper ads and highway billboards in the seven major market areas throughout the State over the next year recognizing individual winners and Alcoa's sponsorship.
