Management Course Helps Brazilian Suppliers Keep Pace with Development

To help suppliers in the Brazilian state of Pará become more competitive and keep pace with local development, Alcoa has formed a partnership with three non-governmental organizations to offer a business management course to local entrepreneurs.

Alcoa is currently constructing a bauxite mine, railroad, and port in the Juruti region of Pará, and the business management course is part of the company's commitment to help the community improve its economic and social infrastructure. The training initiative's partner organizations are the Federation of Industries of the State of Pará, the Commercial and Business Association of Juruti, and the Esperança Institute for Higher Education.

In early 2007, 38 local entrepreneurs completed the pilot course after attending classes for five months at the SENAI-National Industrial Training Service. The classes were grouped into four modules:
  • Strategic management;
  • Marketing and materials and logistics management;
  • Financial management; and
  • Human resources management.

"This training was extremely important, because Juruti and the region around it are undergoing huge growth due to the Juruti mine project," said Otávio Barbosa, owner of Barbosa Construçáo Ltda and president of the Commercial and Business Association of Juruti. "It is important that the local businesspeople and the population as a whole are able to meet the demands of the project. What we learned about pricing our products and improving our customer relations and business infrastructure has made a difference. Based on the knowledge I gained, I trained an employee to deal only with the requirements needed to participate in bidding processes."

For Ronilton Souza Bastos, the course led to his opening the Juruti Cyber Café with his brother.

"The management training gave us the foundation to open our own business," said Bastos. "Today, I can prepare cost spreadsheets, optimize resources, and manage every detail, from plastic cups to the purchasing of equipment. These classes have helped the business owners of Juruti open their eyes."

A second group of entrepreneurs began classes in July 2007.
